Chinese Urological Association (CUA) of Chinese Medical Association (CMA) was established in 1981 by Wu Jieping, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, one of the founders of urology in China. But its history can be dated back to 1920s-1930s. The predecessors, such as Xie Yuanfu, Cao Chentao, Wang Yijing, Shi Xien, Chen Bangdian and Wang Lijing and the older generation of scientists, such as Wu Jieping, Xu Dianyi, Xiong Rucheng, Yu Songting and Ma Yongjiang, had laid a solid foundation for the establishment of CUA and development of modern urology of China with their talent, wisdom and excellent scientific work.
The establishment of Chinese Urological Association of Chinese Medical Association was officially announced, and members of the 1st CUA Council were elected at the 1st National Urology Academic Conference held in Nanjing from November 6th to 11th, 1981. The officials of the 1st CUA Council include: President Wu Jieping, Vice Presidents Ma Yongjiang, Yu Songting, Xiong Rucheng and Secretary Shao Hongxun. The council consisted of 44 members. Every council works for a term of 4 years. The presidents of councils are Wu Jieping, Gu Fangliu, Guo Yinglu and Na Yanqun. By October 2004, six councils had been in office and the 7th council had been elected. The work of the 1st-4th councils started the new era of urology in China. They organized many national and international academic conferences and paid much attention to the cultivation of talents in urology so that urology of China develops rapidly and occupies a place in this field of the world.
The 5th and 6th councils strengthened academic communication with urologists from Hong Kong, Macaw, and Taiwan, Chinese urologists around the world, and the international urology academic circles, and made great efforts to cultivate talents of all levels. President Guo Yinglu of the 5th council proposed the ideal that ˇ°In 2020 urology of China will reach the world levelˇ± to encourage urologists in China to work hard for this goal. The 7th council, elected in October, 2004, has been working vigorously under the leadership of President Na Yanqun with participation of many young members. It has stipulated and begun to implement the Two Standards: one is to standardize the management of professional association, and the other is to standardize the diagnosis and treatment of urological diseases.
The work of CUA mainly consists of academic communication and talent cultivation. Through the efforts of every council and all urologists around the country, the number of urological professionals in China is increasing and the academic level is improving.
